Only picture taken on Easter.
C stayed clean for about 2 minutes after getting his best clothes on; K did a little better. We took a bath at 4:30pm and were in bed at 7:15. K was asleep for about 45 minutes before I heard her coughing in bed. Unfortunately it wasn't a cough. She was throwing up. To complicate matters, D was on-call so I was single parenting and K (for the first time in forever) went to sleep in her room. She woke up screaming and covered in vomit. Miraculously, I managed to get her and all of her bedding out of the room under the cover of darkness without waking C.
Lessons learned: take pictures before leaving home in our best clothes; never eat hard boiled eggs for dinner; and cherish every moment - the good and the not-to-good.

Giant stuff microbes |
K went to school with me today. We staffed my department booth at the University-wide Health and Fitness Expo. She also got to play with a basketful of stuffed microbes that belong to a colleague. Pictured above, she is holding flesh-eating bacteria (notice the tiny fork and knife on the stuffed microbe). And then (moving clockwise) there is plague, diarrhea, hepatitis, and the common cold.

K's quiche. Aside from a little help getting the crust into the piepan and pouring the eggs, she made this quiche all by herself. She loaded it with two cheeses --- swiss and mozzarella.

NYC Marathon
I've applied to the NYC Marathon three years in a row (2010, 2011, and 2012) and was denied all three times. Plans were for D and I to run the 2013 race together. When the 2012 NYC Marathon was canceled and entrants were guaranteed that they could run in 2013, I started to doubt that they'd be able to honor my guaranteed entrance into the 2013 race.
Then I checked the web site and saw this (highlighting mine)...
I'm already making plans to go to NYC in November!
I'm also starting to think about my race-day outfit.
I love the NYC Marathon. So excited to be toeing the line in November.

Every Tuesday is Smoothie Tuesday at our house.
This week we made chocolate, peanut butter, banana smoothies. Here K is sporting her a smoothie mustache.

DC Rock 'N Roll Half Marathon.
I wasn't planning to run this spring's half marathon (or marathon), but when I was a free race entry was offered I couldn't turn it down. And I am so glad I didn't...
Aside from the fact that several of the water stations were poorly staffed, the race was a lot of fun. The weather was perfect and there's nothing better than running in your hometown. I wasn't properly trained for the race. I had a good 30 days of training prior to the race, but I definitely didn't have the endurance to PR. And I had no idea the course included the hill out of Rock Creek Park onto Connecticut Ave. This hill is a butt-kicker. I hate running it while training and avoid it at all costs. Including it in a race -- in the first half of a half marathon and first quarter of a full -- is just cruel. I struggled up to the top of the hill, but I never stopped to walk. Not on the hill; nor at the top to recover.
I had two goals for the race. First, finish in under two hours. The second was to enjoy running in my hometown.
This race was likely my last in DC as a DC resident. My last hometown race in DC.
It was a run for me. A huge confidence boost.
Next up... another half in May. Goal: finish in under 1:50.

What on earth is this? |
A: A gravity furnace
While out looking at new homes, we came across this. A gravity furnace. It is huge. Seriously took up the entire basement of this home. The furnace does not have forced air or any sort of fan. Instead it heats the air with what looks like a large bunsen burner and allows the hot (lighter air) to rise naturally. After talking with our real estate agent and a family who once had one, we learned that these gravity furnaces are silent, but not energy efficient.
